Software Tools

There are several software tools available evaluating the economics of CHP systems. Many consulting firms and energy service companies offer services in this area. If you choose to do the analysis in-house, you may want to consider one of the software tools recently surveyed by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A full version of that survey is provided here in PDF format (PDF 2,895 Kb). The list (alphabetical) of software tools surveyed (and their costs) is as follows:

Other Tools

Combined Heat & Power Resource Guide

Combined Heat & Power Resource Guide (October 2005). The purpose of this guidebook to serve as a ready reference for a wide range of interested parties considering the application of CHP systems. It contains easy to find technical facts/information; answers to the most frequently asked questions, and “rules of thumb” regarding the evaluation and implementation of CHP. The first edition of this guide was completed and made available in late 2003.

Tools for Evaluating Healthcare Facilties

Combined Heat & Power Guide for Hospital Applications (November 2007). The primary objective of this guidebook is to provide a reference document of basic information for hospital managers when considering the application of combined heat and power (CHP) in the healthcare industry, specifically in hospitals.

CHP Education/Assistance Program Guides for the Hospital Market Sector (December 2003 - December 2004). The MAC has also developed a series of CHP Education / Assistance Program Guides for the Hospital Market sector in several states. These reports are intended to serve two purposes:

1. Provide the State Energy offices with the necessary market information on the Hospital Sector within the state to plan and organize an appropriate workshop/conference to educate this sector on CHP and its benefits to the Hospital Sector.

2. Provide the State Energy Offices with many of the technical, financial, communication, and application material that can be utilized in their CHP Hospital education program.

These Reports are currently available for the following five states:

State Baseline CHP Market Guides
The MAC has developed a number of Baseline Analysis reports for the CHP market in various states in the region. Each report provides an assessment of the prevailing environment for CHP systems from the regulatory, private market and technology perspectives within the state of Illinois. This information may be used to develop educational and market transformation programs, which will foster CHP applications. Information in the report includes the following:

  • Survey of Existing CHP Installations
  • Current Pricing Issues
  • CHP Policy Issues
  • CHP Market Capacity Potential
  • Key Local CHP Contacts (A&Es, Property Management Firms, Equipment Manufacturers and Suppliers, Energy Suppliers, Gov’t Associations, etc.)

These Reports are currently available for the following eight states:
